After using Words their Way for several years in my classroom for spelling instruction and having my kiddos sort words, I thought that there surely should be some way for them to sort math as well!!
Each year, the first time my students do a math sort they quickly become frustrated because of all of the thinking involved, but they LOVE the feeling of satisfaction when they finally figure it out and then they BEG me to give them more!
I have used these in my classroom in multiple ways:
- early finisher activities
- math workshop station
- substitute days!!!
- informal assessment
I usually print the sorting cards 2 to a page so that they can glue them to a regular 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper. Occasionally, I will have them also complete the recording sheet. You could also print one set of sorting cards on cart stock and have them sort at a center.
I have used these with second graders for years and I am now using the spring set with my advanced third graders and the back to school set with my remediation kiddos.
Check out my Back to School math sorts! When your kids fall in love with these come back and grab the sorts I have for all seasons.
