Some of my favorite math lesson's are the ones that incorporate children's literature. Stuart J. Murphy's books are among my favorite math books. To introduce solid figures to my students, I read Captain Invincible and the Solid Shapes to them, which they love!
Captain Invincible and his sidekick, Comet, are on a mission to fly back to Earth. Along the way, they face asteroids, poisonous gas, and aliens. Luckily, their spaceship has a panel of solid figure-shaped buttons. Each time they face an obstacle, Captain Invincible pushes a button, and the solid figure emerges from the spaceship and saves the day! This book has the students laughing, and by the end, they have a much better understanding of solid figures.
After reading and discussing Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes once with the students, we read it again as we complete the following Solid Figures to the Rescue! worksheet. Click on the picture below to pick up your free copy. This book and worksheet would also make a great math center.
My students also complete a Solid Figures Scavenger Hunt as homework following this activity. I would love to have you visit my blog and pick up the Solid Figures Scavenger Hunt freebie!

I would LOVE to hear more about how you incorporate math literature into your day. I'm part of the Guided Math book study and this is one area I need to improve upon.

Mathematics worksheets are best option for maths learning and your provided sheets are great as they have lots of question and I would like to prefer them.
DeleteAre you a North Carolina teacher? We are just starting CCSS in Louisiana but it is not mandated in 2nd but we are going full force anyway. We plan to use alot of NC stuff from the wiki. Can you tell me where is the Geometry, Measurement/Data and Algebric materials or units. I only found one on Addition/Subtraction. Are they using the NCMT for those other standards?
ReplyDeleteI am a NC teacher, we are going full blown CCSS next year in NC. I am glad that you commented b/c I never knew that there was a NC wiki for common core. My county is using something called CMAPP that has all of our units and lessons mapped out for us with materials. I would love to share it with you because it is amazing but it is password protected. I begin teaching the CCSS on July 9th when my kids come back so be sure to stop by my blog as I develop resources! :)
